The UP College Admission Test, popularly known as UPCAT, is just around the corner, usually the first weekend of August ( Aug. 1 and 2, 2009). Can you remember you first campus choice? Mine was UPLB, and the first course choice was BS Biology.

Did you know that last year alone, more than 62,000 applicants took the exam? Well, if you know of anyone planning to take the exam, here are some information:

I came across this trailer of UPCAT, the movie about high school students wanting to take the UPCAT. There are some UPLB scenes shown. Brings back memories of my turn to take the exam. Nag-UP or nothing din ba kayo? I remember baking brownies the day before the exam as my baon! Kayo, how did you prepare for the UPCAT?

Join the UPLB Gawad Kalinga Bayani Challenge

The second Gawad Kalinga Bayani Challenge sponsored by the UPGK-LB will be on September 6, 7, 13, and 14, 2007 at Brgy. Putho, Los Baños, Laguna. This activity is in cooperation with GK LB Ville caretaker team headed by Dr. Rey Dela Cruz. The challenge is open to all organizations in and out of the University, as well as faculty members, alumni and different sectors. A team should be composed of 10 members and is assigned to build one house for the dates specified.

Even though UPGK-LB has member volunteers every weekend, there is still a need for a “surge” of participants and the Bayani challenge is a great way to cater to that need. The activity also gave the participants a chance to hear the three talks ( Bayan, Bayani, Bayanihan) which, in completion, will count them as a GK Isang Milyong Bayani (GK1MB).

So how about spending two meaningful weekends building a house? This would be a great way to hold mini-reunions, don’t you think?

Thai food in Los Baños

There are two Thai restaurants in Los Baños, but my favorite is Ning’s Thai. Tita Cora, a Filipina who married a Thai graduate student, owns the place. She also cooks the food and you can watch her as she cooks. There are a few selections, but the taste is consistent. My favorites are the Thai noodles called Pa-siu or Pad siew and the Chicken with nuts.

Ning’s Thai is open for lunch and dinner daily. It is located in front of the Agrix Bldg in Grove. There’s a coffee shop in front, too, which have been featured in the Philippine Daily Inquirer. I have yet to try this coffee shop, it looks promising and they even have a blog!

Anyway, to get back to Thai food, hope to see you there.

UPLB is abuzz these days with the search for the new UPLB chancellor. There are three nominees – Dr. Candida B. Adalla, former dean of the College of Agriculture; Dr. Felino Lansigan, professor of Statistics and member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize; and Dr. Luis Rey I. Velasco, the current Chancellor.

Who do you think should be the next chancellor?

Whirlwind/Tornado in Los Baños

Los Baños residents witnessed a tornado being this afternoon, between 4 to 5 PM. I have lived in Los Baños for a long time, and I think this is the first time it happened.
