I managed to visit the garden show last April and here are some pictures. The plant in focus are the crotons or what we know as San Francisco. They come in dazzling yellows and various shapes. There were also entried on the Bangkok kalachuchi, the first time I saw in white. In recent years, herbs has been the fashion, so there’s a variety of herbs available, too. Things I looked forward, too, was getting the kafir plant, whose leaves make for very delicious Thai dishes. What else did I see? Here are the pictures:

Crotons or what we called as San Francisco take center stage in last month’s garden show. They came in various colors and leaf shapes.

One of the many colorful ornamental plants available at the show.

Bangkok kalachuchi in red, I also saw one with white flowers.

You will surely appreciate the abundance of flower-bearing plants, this is one of them. I didn’t catch the name of this flower, though.

Bromeliands came in many colors and sizes. I remember in college, my blockmates and I went to the garden. The bromeliads were the rage then and so expensive, we priced them into how many units (225 pesos pa lang per unit noon) each plant would cost.

Lots of flowering plants available. One of the booths I like to go to is that of Dr. Gil Divinagracia. He still has one of the best collection of ornamentals in the show.

One booth had many cactus in pots sold. Good for gifts or display, don’t you think?

It won’t be a garden show without orchids. In previous years, there used to be sold orchids produced from tissue culture and you could buy them still in bottles.
Another thing to look forward too are the landscape designs.
Here’s another one.

So, any fond memories of garden shows during your stay here at UPLB? Any plant or tree you bought home? A fruit tree that is now bearing fruits? The next garden show will be in October, so see you then!

One of the most popular songs (after More Than Words) was Go Ninja Go! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 was the latest movie them. I remember dancing to the groove of Vanilla Ice with my blockmates, sabay sigaw ng “Go Ninja Go” while raising our hands. I also remember our Miss Freshman, I think Eleanor was her name. I was a Ninja Turtles fanatic, going home early on Fridays to catch the 7pm cartoons in Channel 2. There was only one TV at Womens’ and you have to battle it out what to watch! To all Ninja Turtles fans out there, here’s that Ninja rap to bring you back in 1991.

One of the most important events of my life at UPLB was attending the World Youth Day celebrations in Manila, in 1995. I was most excited at seeing Pope John Paul II and the prospect of meeting people from all over the world. Some of the things I remembered are the following:

Learning the song “Tell the world of His love” and the action that goes with it. I can still remember my classmate Ome of Lisseux (tama ba spelling?) singing it in our P.I. 100 class as part of the talents/skills we share in class under Beng Boro

Instead of proceeding at the Tent City in Lawton we had the campout first at the Jamboree site together with delegates from other parishes. We slept in tents, too. I cannot remember the name of the parish priest at San Antonio then, but he did share that he was the one who held the bible for Pope John Paul II to read during mass when he came to the Philippines in 1981.

Calling meal times Bukas Loob sa Diyos or BLD as in Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner.

Group discussions on Faith, Hope and Charity – from the program and liturgy guide book

More singing, masses, confessions and prayer meetings

On Friday, January 13, 1995 we were able to go to the Tent City, we formed a long convoy then of jeepneys and vans all from Los Baños. I remember we went there at night.

The first thing that greeted me at the Tent City was this huge streamer that says “BE NOT AFRAID”. The first food we ate? Jollibee longganisa!

We slept in big tents and bathed in tent-like bathrooms. Wala nga lang hook ka yang hirap magsabit ng gamit!

Hearing the mass presided by the Pope and seeing him in his popemobile afterwards. Sayang wala akong picture.

Walking from Lawton to CCP and back just to celebrate mass with the Pope..

We had some free time and my sister and I were able to walk around the old city, visiting Manila Cathedral, Casa Manila and the nooks and cranny of Intramuros.

Seeing millions of people in Luneta just to hear the Pope again during mass. That was the first time that I knew that he already had prepared speeches marked “embargo, not to be published until (date)”. Kaya pala ang bilis magprint ng mga dyaryo ng speeches, ganun pala ang ginagawa.

Generous St Therese parishioners who helped us raise funds to be able to join as delegates. The Couples for Christ who organized the Tent City making it possible for delegates to have a safe place to stay.

Souvenirs galore! From tshirts, keychains, caps, posters of the Pope, pins, etc… My sister and I still has a WYD ref magnet attached to the ref at home.

What really stood out was the theme “As the Father has sent me, so am I sending you” (John 20:21). The Sunday after my graduation from UPLB, I went to mass at St Therese and that was the gospel reading. I knew then that I made the right decision to leave UPLB.

The World Youth Day 1995 ref magnet souvenir, one of the many souvenirs you
could buy during the gathering.
